South Adams had no answer for Mallory Winner and Jay County Wednesday, as the Patriots hit all three Starfires hurler on their way to a convincing 18-6 victory.
Winner threw all seven innings for the winning Patriots, striking out six, but more importantly, she threw strikes when she needed to and did not allow a run until her team already lead 7-0.Â
Winner also had three hits at the plate, including a home run to lead off the third inning.
Jay scored twice on South Adams starter Gracy Bixler in the first inning and five more times in the third, highlighted by a home run by shortstop Renna Schwieterman.Â
Bixler got into more trouble after the two home runs, loading the bases by hitting two batters and walking another. Madyson Fraley drove in two with a base hit to the left side to end Bixler’s night. She was relieved by Peyton Pries, who struck out Winner to end the trouble.Â
Doing her best to keep the Starfires in the game, Peyton Pries homered to center to put two on the board, but Jay answered right back with five more runs in the top of the fourth.Â
Schwieterman knocked in two more runs in that big rally and Pries was eventually replaced at pitcher with the score 10-2 by Reagan Beitler.
It got even worse in the top of the seventh for the home team as Jay County hit their third home run of the game and put five more on the scoreboard.
The win gives Jay County and even greater grip on the ACAC and a 14-1 record overall. They play Bluffton Thursday and Woodlan Friday.
The Starfires are set to play Southern Wells Thursday on the road.
