Owen Wanner struck out 15 in a fantastic performance Saturday as the Starfires jumped out to an 8-0 lead and then held on for an 8-5 victory at Fort Recovery.
Wanner was working on a one-hitter with his team up 8-0 in the seventh, getting the first two outs easily before running into trouble.
Needing just one more out to secure the complete game shutout, Wanner hit a batter, then walked one and then allowed a two-run single with two strikes.
Another walk by Wanner required coach Buckingham to make a change and Caleb Hirschfield was brought in to get the final out. Wanner went to shortstop and could not handle the next ball put in play, but the Indians ran themselves out of the inning to end the game by trying to stretch a double into a triple on the next play and the Starfires got the win.
Hirschfield had two hits at the bottom of the lineup and Luke Bauman continued his hot hitting with two hits of his own. Leadoff hitter Kyle Minger also had two hits, as did right field Hunter Miracle.
The Starfires are set for their first ACAC clash at home Monday against Southern Wells.
