The Braun-Fawcett-Myers Memorial Courtyard and Gardens at the MERIT Center in Decatur could become a reality before winter sets in, Decatur City Council learned at its meeting Tuesday night.
Adams County Council Executive Director Michelle Lengerich, who has spearheaded the drive to bring about the courtyard for seniors, told council that the fundraising goal of some $100,000 has been secured.
She said the goal was reached through the efforts of approximately 900 donors, some of whom gave as little as $2 to assist the cause.
Lengerich said the idea for the courtyard & gardens was launched four years ago and fundraising began a year and a half ago.
She informed council that it is hoped construction can start next month and be mostly completed before winter sets in, with flowers, bushes and the like having to wait until next spring.
The specialized environment is designed to provide a peaceful, highly accessible nature retreat for local seniors
When finished, the courtyard & memorial gardens will include the following:
Double shuffleboard court.
Wheelchair accessible planter beds for gardening.
A large pavilion for shaded seating.
Handicap doors with ramps with railings.
A memorial corner honoring three former Northwest Elementary School students: Matthew Ryan Braun, Ebony Ann Fawcett, and Jaden Todd Myers..
The courtyard & gardens will be located on the south side, or rear, of the former Northwest Elementary School building. The area has been neglected for years.
When completed, it will be open to seniors Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The public will be allowed to rent the area on weekends and after 4 p.m. weekdays.
