Sometimes the bounce of the ball changes the complexion of a game and Friday night it was a pair of interceptions by Denver Moser that played a pivotal role in Adams Central’s victory in a hostile environment at Bishop Luers, 35-20.
Playing their first game as a 3A team against the team who represented the north in the last two 3A championship games, the Adams Central Jets made a strong statement to back up their preseason #5 ranking in the coaches poll.
Moser’s first pick came with just minutes left in the third quarter and the Jets clinging to a one-point lead. A couple of carries by Jami Roach and Thomas Laughlin got the ball inside the ten and Barrett Collier finished it off from there, putting the visitors up by eight early in the fourth quarter.
Moser finished off the Knights ten minutes later with his second interception as Luers was driving late, trying to score quickly and hoping to win an onside kick thereafter.
The offensive output for Adams Central was greater than the highly-touted Luers outfit by 72 yards. Barrett Collier led all players with 112 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.
Roach had 84 yards rushing and completed two passes (on six attempts). One went 47 yards to Collier and the other was a touchdown to Ashton Yergler for 34 yards.
Kale Rathbun and David Fisher teamed up for a key sack for a big loss that led to a poor punt that hit a Luers lineman with the score 28-20. It gave the Jets great field position on the drive that resulted in their final score.
TJ Epperson had 110 yards rushing and he had the Knights in good shape when they led 20-14 after his second touchdown of the night.
Tommy Reichert was accurate apart from the three picks, going 22 for 29 for 199 yards and a touchdown with 22 seconds left in the first half. He was tackled three times behind the line for a loss of 34 yards, with the AC D-Line showing there is plenty left after graduating several key players.
Xander Schwartz led the Jets with eleven tackles (four solo, two for loss). Roach also had eleven tackles and an interception.
Along with the big offensive night, Collier also had a pair of tackles for loss.
The Jets will open their home schedule with a game that looks even more appetizing after the win at Luers and the performance of the Eastside Blazers against South Adams. Only one of AC and Eastside will survive Week Two unbeaten. Fans of the Jets can hear that game via WZBD.
