KINGSLAND – Bellmont’s two freshmen running phenoms did not let the weather or the ground conditions have any effect on the first official 5K as part of coach Randy Hisner’s team, leading the Braves to a third-place finish with a pair of top-ten finishes.

Emmett Glenn was third and Frank Heimann was tenth to lead the Braves.

Hisner eagerly awaited the results for his freshman pair, standing on the final straight as Glenn and Heimann emerged from the woods at Norwell and turned the corner to see the finish line, which also served as the start line for the course.

An already muddy course was made worse by rain that increased in intensity at every kilometer of the boys race. The girls went first and ran in only slightly better conditions.

The Braves won the tiebreaker over Bluffton, with both teams knotted at 89 points. Bellmont’s sixth and seventh man were both ahead of Bluffton’s sixth.

There was little drama at the front of the race, with everyone in attendance expecting Zander Ritenour of Lakewood Park to cross the line first. He did that 12 seconds before Emerson Sewelin (Garrett), who just held off a charging Glenn.

Tyler Schwartz led the Adams Central Jets with a thirteenth-place finish individually.

Freshman Henry Michaels had a nice day with a top-40 finish. Schwartz’s 18:40 was only 20 seconds from his career best.

Heritage had juniors Alex Smith and Will Voglewede out front, with both clocking sub-21 times.

Voglewede was just 12 seconds off his PR. Gavin Juricak had enough of the conditions and finished the final straight with shoes in hand, finding some relief in smiling at the absurd conditions (see below).
