Ruth A. McKinnon, 82, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Adams Woodcrest.
She was born on October 12, 1943, in Decatur, Indiana, to Peter and Lafauna (Haggerty) Koenig, both of whom preceded her in death.
Ruth was united in marriage to Bobby McKinnon on June 10, 1967, at East Liberty United Methodist Church and he preceded her in death on June 6, 2007.
Faith and service were central to Ruth’s life. She was a devoted member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville, an active member of the Monroeville Lions Club, and remained connected to her nursing roots through the St. Joseph School of Nursing Alumni Association.
A proud graduate of Decatur High School’s Class of 1962, Ruth pursued her passion for caring for others by earning an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from St. Joseph School of Nursing, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis. She devoted 42 years of compassionate service as a Registered Nurse at various area hospitals, retiring from Adams Memorial Hospital, in 2009. Even beyond her professional career, Ruth continued to serve her community as a longtime volunteer with the Monroeville EMS, always willing to lend a helping hand when others were in need.
In her free time, Ruth found joy in knitting, tending to her plants, caring for her beloved cats, and researching local and family history. She was known for her sharp mind, caring heart, and dedication to her family, friends, patients, and community.
Survivors include her son, Mark (Susan) McKinnon of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two granddaughters, Emily (Nathaniel) Brewer & Rachel (Marcus) Hartle; and brother, Rick Koenig of Decatur, Indiana.
A Family Prayer Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Homes, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Dennis Di Benedetto officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Academy Cemetery in Nathan, Arkansas, with Latimer Funeral Home assisting the family.
Family and friends will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Homes, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Monroeville EMS or the Monroeville Lions Club.
