The flag Decatur deemed its own a year ago has been on something of a back burner since. But it’s currently coming forward again.
Decatur City Council was told at its latest meeting that Community Coordinator Jamie Gephart and Main Street Executive Director Taylor Braun are looking for new ways to pump renewed life into the flag.
“We’re exploring options,” Braun said, referring to flag sizes – including a large one that could go on the City Hall wall – and smaller sizes to be sold to the public.
“We’ve been thinking about it for some time, trying to decide which would be the best way to do it,” Gephart added.
There are several options including, as mentioned, picking a certain size – or sizes – to purchase for sale to the public
First-term council member Jenny Bowers-Shultz originated the idea of the city having its own flag
Bowers-Shultz said at the time that she hoped such a flag would “foster civic pride, uniting the community around an official symbol representative of the history and promising future of the City of Decatur.”
A contest to decide on a design was held, with 52 entries coming from the city and surrounding area.
A committee selected the design offered by Don Gephart and unveiled it in mid-June.
Gephart’s winning design brought him a grand prize of $1,000.
