NEW HAVEN – Adams Central’s Braylen Cowans isn’t a high jumper, but he leaped about six feet in the air after his discus throw hit the ground 170 and a half feet away from the circle Thursday at the New Haven Boys’ Track and Field Sectional.
The celebration was well deserved. The monster throw gave him a 10-foot winning margin over runner-up Quenten Price of Bishop Luers and earned him the only blue ribbon among Z-Land athletes. Cowans, only a sophomore, added over 14 feet to his previous best of 156-4 to nab the top seed in next week’s Carroll Regional, a bit under two feet ahead of Alexandria’s Ian Canfield.

Heritage’s Alex Nagle also had a major improvement with his fourth-place effort of 143-1, well over his PR of 129-4, as nine of the top ten athletes in the event took advantage of the perfect wind conditions to establish personal bests.
As expected, Homestead dominated the meet with 163 points to the 100.5 of runner-up and defending champion New Haven. Huntington North took third with 85.5. Heritage was the top Z-Land team, in fifth place with 51, just three points from fourth-place Norwell. Adams Central was seventh (37 points), South Adams tenth (15 points), and Bellmont eleventh (13 points).

Homestead had five individual champions, led by double-winner Braylin Tisdale, who won the 110 hurdles in 13.84 and the 300 hurdles in 39.18. The Spartans also took titles in the 4X100 and 4X800 relays.

Huntington North had a double individual champion in Nolan Mitchell (100 meters in 11.00 and 200 meters in 22.30), and New Haven’s distance ace, senior Bryan Garcia, won the 1600 meters (4:20.72) and the 3200 meters (9:27.39). He is the top seed in both events for the regional.

Adams Central had the only runner-up finish for area squads with its 4X800 relay team. The only third-place finish for Z-Landers was in the 100 meters by Heritage’s Lucas Weber (11.09). Weber also took fourth in the 200 meters (22.92).

Other local fourth-place finishes came from Deacon Bierbaum of South Adams in the 1600 meters (4:42.37), Ethan Crockett of AC in the 3200 (10:04.1), sophomore Sawyer Thiele of Heritage in the 300-meter hurdles (41.34), William Patterson of South Adams in the long jump (20-10.25), Alden Bowers of Heritage in the shot put (43-4.5), Heritage’s 4X100 relay, and the aforementioned Nagle of Heritage in the discus.

Bellmont’s highest finisher was senior Hayden Whittenbarger in fifth in the 3200 meters in a big PR of 10:35.84.
The regional meet will be held at Carroll High School next Thursday, May 28, starting at 6:00 P.M.
