Decatur Mayor Dan Rickord wants to have the city honor the Bellmont High School girls basketball 3A state champions, but it’s easier said then getting it scheduled.
After an effort to do so at the March 17 meeting of city council failed due to activities in which the girls were involved, this week’s council meeting on Tuesday night didn’t work out, either.
Seems the team had something else to do as a group – be honored by the Indiana Pacers!

The Bellmont bunch – players, coaches and staff – were one of eight state championship teams honored by the Pacers Tuesday night at the Pacers game in Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
It was, of course, a return to the arena where the Braves defeated Indianapolis Roncalli, 55-46, capturing the school’s first state championship in basketball.
Also honored were (boys team listed first): 1A, Barr-Reeve and Borden; 2A, Park Heritage and Eastern; 3A, Indianapolis Cathedral boys; 4A, Mt. Vernon and Center Grove.
Meanwhile, Mayor Rickord continues to work at it … maybe the next council meeting, on April 21.
