The opening game of the season looked to be going the Heritage Patriots’ way Wednesday night.
Early runs gave Addie Bacon some space with which to work and the Patriots built a lead, then responded to two Columbia City runs in the top of the fifth with two of their own in the bottom.
That 5-3 lead heading into the final two innings turned into an 11-5 loss, however, as the home team allowed a four-spot in both the sixth and the seventh innings to drop to 0-1 on the young season.

Bacon pitched into the sixth with a fine performance, but five Heritage errors did her no favors on the night. She finished with just five hits and two earned runs allowed across 5+ innings, striking out two.
Hadlee Shipp came on in relief and finished the game. She was charged with four runs, but only two were earned.
At the plate, the Patriots pounded out twelve hits against Columbia City’s Layla Doehrmann.
Elaine Bickel, who will be asked to bat leadoff this year, replacing Danica Fuller, had a pair of singles and three stolen bases.
Bacon had a good night at the plate with three hits to help her own cause.
Teaghan O’Shaughnessey tripled and scored.
The Patriots will play at North Side Thursday night.
