FORT WAYNE – Damon Light will return to the IHSAA state diving meet for Adams Central and he will be joined by a familiar face, as Logan Whitacre of the Bellmont Braves broke a 20-year drought for BHS divers by qualifying Tuesday at the Helen P. Brown Natatorium.

Last year’s state runner-up, senior Mason Lawson of Fishers, won the meet with an impressive 11-dive total of 524.10. Lawson was joined by his teammate and classmate, Kirby Danglade, as state qualifiers. Danglade, who was sixth overall in last year’s state meet, was second with 496.65.

Light finished 11th at last year’s state meet with a point total of 370.95 and he exceeded that number at Tuesday’s regional. Light was third behind Lawson and Danglade.

Logan Whitacre, who is already a three-time champion in the NE8, finished fourth behind Light with 354.15 points. That total is a new personal best for Whitacre over 11 dives, beating his NE8-winning total of 354 a few weeks ago.

Whitacre beat out Alrik Mansberger of Carmel for fourth by .10 points.
Norwell’s Benjamin Peterson was 13th and did not advance.

Last year’s state champion, Grant Cates of Oak Hill, graduated, leaving the door open for a new champion.
Both Light and Whitacre will begin competition at 9 a.m. Saturday at the IU Indy Natatorium in Indianapolis.
