On Monday February 16, 2026 the Adams County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a SCAM involving an individual claiming to be an employee of the Sheriff’s Office. In the SCAM, the individual contacts a member of an incarcerated subject’s family and identifies himself as being and employee of the Sheriff’s Office. The family member is then told that they can get their incarcerated loved one out on bond or bail quicker by utilizing VENMO, PAYPAL or any other online Cash app.
The individual then provides an amount to the family member. If the family member cannot pay the stated amount, they are asked how much they can pay and then given instruction on how to pay it. On the particular call reported on this date, VENMO alerted the user that the transaction was a SCAM and the user discontinued the transaction and
alerted the Sheriff’s Office.
Adams County Residents should understand that if they have a family member and/or loved one incarcerated, that the Sheriff’s Office will not contact them to solicit the Bond/Bail money. Any incarcerated individual that has the ability to pay a Bond to be released will be offered a phone call in which they themselves will make contact with a
family member, loved one or a Bondsman directly.
Do not provide any information including your full name, Date of Birth or Social Security Number to anyone over the phone if you are not sure who you are speaking with. If someone identifies themselves as being with a Law Enforcement Agency and you are unsure that they are being truthful, hang up and contact your Local Dispatch Center at 260-724-5345 to verify the individual or report the incident.
