The atmosphere at the Teepee Thursday was not filled with excitement, especially after both Bellmont and Yorktown had just wrapped up their Team State campaigns.
The mild excitement of the night needed a cold splash of water or, perhaps, a slap in the face.
While it was a bit more than a slap, the right hook landed by Yorktown heavyweight Corbin Buck handed Grady Baker a penalty point and woke up the Bellmont team and the home crowd, lifting Bellmont to a 59-15 victory over their biggest rival of the past three decades, the Yorktown Tigers.
The crowd was somewhat subdued after an unfortunate second injury time cost Sam Wolpert his choice in the third period, and ultimately, the match, against the talented Wyatt Hoppes.
The locals were mildly entertained by Charlie Faurote’s tech fall at 157 and Austin Manley’s sudden pin with a throw at 165, but it wasn’t really until 285 that they got loud.
Early hand fighting led to head fighting between Grady Baker and Corbin Buck, but it was a full right hook to the face by Buck that gave Baker a point and a conk in the noggin, leading to a lengthy delay as the Bellmont senior had to regain his composure before he was ready to continue.
Once he had his whereabouts again, Baker was determined to make his presence known, pushing Buck all over the mat and building a big lead before scoring a fall in the second period.
The following bout was the exact opposite, but Bellmont still picked up a win, with Jacob Binegar riding out Ben Dygard for the entire second period, then picking up his escape in th third an holding on for a 1-0 win.
Baker and Binegar’s wins were the first two in a run of five Bellmont victories in the final five bouts.
The Braves will wrap up the dual meet season with another home match Tuesday against Carroll.
