MONROE – The Delta Eagles entered Thursday’s dual meet with Adams Central as an underdog, with the Jets coming off their runner-up finish at Team State and on a roll this season. The Eagles knew they would win with their studs, something they do against just about every team, but there were likely to be three real toss-ups in the dual and they’d need to take all three to win the meet.
Ryan Beer made sure that they wouldn’t win all three.
Continuing what was supposed to be a good start for the Jets when the starting weight was drawn at 175, no one would have been surprised when the home team took an 18-0 lead.
Beer battled like he had all season long, carrying a 0-0 score after four minutes of battling on his feet with Caleb Thurston. Beer took down with his choice in the third, got his escape, and then put the match away with a takedown.
The freshman’s victory made the math extremely difficult for the visitors, and even though they absolutely dominated the Jets over the next five bouts, few should have ben surprised. In fact, the Jets actually saved two team points at 120 and 132 by giving up tech falls instead of pins.
Once Myles Kaehr took care of Abe Witter with a pin in the second period, the Jets really just needed to get wins from Mav Dubach and Brason Schortgen to secure the team victory.
Delta won a great bout at 144 with a takedown at the buzzer to keep their faint hopes alive, and Sam Mosier gave Dylan Ogg a rude awakening to the 150 weight class, beating Ogg 3-1 with a late takedown of his own, but it was never going to be enough to change the team outcome.
Dubach handed the baton to Brason with a 90-second pin and Shorty scored 15 points in the first period to score the tech.
Adams Central will now focus on their home ten-way in the SAC on Saturday morning.
