Keep mowing that grass and pulling those weeds, folks, or you could find yourself in violation of a Decatur ordinance.
“A friendly reminder of the city’s weeds and vegetation ordinance since it is that time of the year,” says Building/Zoning Director Curt Witte, whose department is in charge of code enforcement.
Per City Code 920.2;
Height restrictions: Vegetation that grows beyond six inches in height is considered neglected.
Noxious weeds: Specific plants like thistle and poison ivy are identified as noxious and are subject to removal.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is required to prevent vegetation from becoming a nuisance.
“Our code enforcement officers will be out checking up on any complaints that the office receives,” Witte said.
He told city council at its latest meeting that as of June 3, the department had sent out just shy of 150 abatement notices. “So we’re out there,” he added.
The department doesn’t look for violations on its own, instead, it reacts to complaints from citizens.
“Just remember, when you mow your yard, you are doing it for your neighbors,” Mayor Dan Rickord said.
