Two of the top pitchers in the ACAC went head to head Wednesday and the only thing separating Addie Baker and Mallory Winner was a double for the Starfires in the bottom of the third, as they went on to win the ballgame, 3-1.
Baker struck out eight Patriots and held them scoreless until the seventh inning to seal the victory, allowing just three hits.
A single by Avery Brown to lead off the third was followed by two walks – one to Lyndsey Lefever and the other to Bekah Patterson – to load the bases for Shelby Weigel. Weigel doubled to the gap in right center on the very first pitch from Winner and aggressive baserunning paid off as Patterson scored all the way from first as the throw was off the mark and the home team had a three-run lead.

Addie Baker did the rest and it wasn’t until the Patriots were down to their last out before they scored a rather meaningless run to break the shutout on a passed ball. Baker got a strikeout looking to end the game.
The Starfires will face the 1-15 Southern Wells Raiders Thursday as they wait and hope that both Woodlan and Heritage will suffer a loss to get South Adams back in the ACAC race.
