Patience is being requested as a major project bringing extensive street and sidewalk improvements to Decatur is underway.
City Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert told city council at its Tuesday meeting that DC Construction began work on the project that day and is passing out information to residents of the affected areas.
“We’re asking people to be a little patient,” Gilbert said. “It’s going to take three to four months. But it’s going to be a wonderful improvement when it’s done.”

The Pendleton firm won the contract with a bid of $1,499,410.72.
The work is funded by a grant of $1,456,125 awarded Decatur via the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Community Crossing program. The city adds a 25% match, or roughly $363,000, which has been budgeted for this year.
The major undertaking will see nearly two miles of streets being paved and produce more than two miles of new sidewalks.
The work is concentrated in an area in the vicinity of the city pool.
Here are the streets scheduled for milling (removing top layer) and repaving:
1) N. 3rd St. from Monroe St. to 5th St.
2) N. 4th St. from Monroe St. to Jackson St.
3) Jackson St. from 1st St. to 5th St.
