A late rush of filings pushed the number of entries for the Decatur flag design contest into the 30s … and maybe 40s.
Entries closed Wednesday and Jenny Bower-Shultz, the city council member who originated the idea for a city flag design, said that after the final flurry she estimated the total number of entries at 35 to 40.

“I will be sorting through them in the next few weeks,” she added.
Following the deadline, a committee will select the top five designs. Although city council will make the final decision on which design will be used on a city flag, the top five selections will be shared with the public, Bowers-Shultz said earlier.
In announcing the contest, she said she wanted to have a flag “to foster civic pride, uniting the community around an official symbol representative of the history and promising future of the City of Decatur.”
