The City of Decatur has made “great headway” in complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, Decatur City Council recently was informed via an annual program review submitted by Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert.
“We’ve made great headway, a lot of it due to our CC (Community Crossings) work,” he said.
The city upgrades began in 2011.
State MVH (Motor Vehicle Highway) and city sidewalk funds also have been used to make improvements to handicap accessible ramps in several areas in the city.
The areas involved, with the number of of ramps improved, were as follows:
Fifth St., from Second to Adams, 19.
Adams St., from Third to 13th, 13.
Fourth St., from Adams to Monroe, 8
Seventh St., from Adams to Monroe, 1.

Elm St., 3.
A total of 473 ramps are listed under the green category, which are completed, and 125 remain in red, or needing work.
“So we’re getting there,” Gilbert said. “I would guess that in the next three to four years we will be there (full compliance).”
A considerable amount of improvements are likely to be made this year through the major Community Crossings project which will include some two and a half miles of sidewalk upgrades.
REMOVAL: Gilbert said that if anyone has a request to have a barrier handicap ramp removed, they may call 724-3356 or contact him at: jgilbert@decaturin.org
