For the first time ever, the New Haven Bulldogs have beaten Bellmont High School’s wrestling team in a dual meet.
The 47-29 victory in Saturday’s fourth round of the NE8 Duals snapped a 59-match winning streak for the Bellmont program, who last lost to New Haven as Decatur High School in January of 1963.
Oddly enough, the loss did not really feel like a letdown or a disappointment, but rather an acknowledgement of just how good this New Haven team is, especially after they got all eight of their wins in less than six minutes on the mat.
Bellmont handled their three opponents Saturday morning in preparation for the presumed championship match with coach Jimmy Linn’s team, but the Braves found the going to be rough against the middle weights, taking just one of the first four bouts – a tech fall from Henry Faurote at 138.

Gavin Davis rescued the Braves with a quick fall and the team gained some hope for an upset when Landon Rich scored a victory at 175, but a flip-flop at 190 and 215 left both teams with a fall after Ryne Fawbush was pinned at 190 in the first period and Xavior Palacios had to find the answer at 215.

With the math against them, the Braves did score a bit of a big win when Grady Baker, who suffered his first loss of the season Friday, fought hard to beat an old enemy, Charles McGrant. The two heavyweights were tied at 1-1 and on their feet in the third period when Baker scored the winning three.

New Haven secured their historic victory over the Braves with four falls in the four lowest weights, including a win by #1-ranked Julianna OCampo at 106.
Gabe Myers matched his partner Henry Faurote and closed the match out with a five-point win at 132 for Bellmont.
To Bellmont’s credit, they came back and wrestled well against East Noble and walked out of the CC gym with a win over the Knights, who are vying for an at-large spot in 3A for Team State. Will Franze, Jacob Binegar and Jacob Bleeke all bounced back from New Haven losses to pick up wins against EN.

The match with East Noble was tied 30-30 when Landon Sielschott stepped onto the mat at 126 and the freshman scored a fall in 65 seconds to hand the baton off to Myers and Faurote, who both added yet another tech fall to their season tally to round out the day.

The Braves are back in action Thursday against South Adams before the semester ends.
