Carolyn Sue McCammon passed peacefully surrounded by her family on November 18, 2024. Carolyn was born on June 16, 1946 to Bacel and Cumi (Howard) Pickett in Muncie, IN. Carolyn grew up in Muncie and attended Ball State University. After graduation she became a teacher at Adams Central Schools in Monroe, IN.
Carolyn spent the next 25 years teaching. She initiated the Veteran’s Oral History Project and coordinated the annual Veteran’s Day celebration at the school and always won the annual “Teacher That Drives the Furthest” award. She also taught at Ivy Tech Community College in Fort Wayne, IN and later she taught online classes after her retirement from teaching. She and Neil also hosted international students that attended Ball State University.
Carolyn was a member of the Indiana State Teacher’s Association, and an active member of the First Assembly of God in New Castle, IN and volunteered in the food pantry at the church. Carolyn loved gospel music, working in her flower beds but most of all she loved to spend time with her family. She also had seemingly endless home projects for her husband that they tackled together.
Carolyn leaves behind her husband of 57 years Neil McCammon, her children Cheryl Rivers (David) and Douglass McCammon (Shelia); grandchildren Megan, Nathan, Jacob, Emily, Kiah and Quinten (Brianna); and five great-grandchildren. Carolyn was preceded in death by her daughter Karen (McCammon) Pirtle; her parents Bacel and Cumi (Howard) Pickett; brother Wallace Cooper and sister Gloria Condra.
Arrangements have been entrusted to The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel. Celebration of Life services will be held at the First Assembly of God located at 3600 South Memorial, New Castle, IN. Please check The Meeks Mortuary website for dates and times.
