The Adams Central Flying Jets added more intrigue to the late-season story for ACAC volleyball Saturday with a convincing tournament championship ahead of an all-important match Thursday at South Adams for the regular season title.
Playing in a pool with perhaps the two biggest competitors for the title (thanks to a blind draw), the Jets took care of South Adams in straight sets, then won the opening set convincingly against Jay County.
The Patriots bounced back to force a third set with a spot in the championship on the line, but the combination of senior leadership and freshman youth once again worked to perfection and coach Tami Henry’s team smashed Jay 15-4 in the third.
That set up AC for a trophy match with Woodlan and the Jets did much the same as they had done with Jay County, winning in three sets after dropping the second set.
Freshman Emma Hirschy led the team in the championship with nine kills. She had ten in the three-set win against Jay County and five against South Adams.
The Jets entered the week ranked 56th in the state among all classes in the Indiana Prep Volleyball ratings, but will likely rise significantly after a fantastic week of five straight wins.
Paige Hamilton led the Jets in kills with eight in the intra-county match, while Laney Trausch led the Stars with seven.
The Starfires exacted a measure of revenge on Jay from the sweep loss earlier in the week to reach the third-place match, beating Heritage in a competitive three-set match.
