An idea brought forth several months ago by a member of Decatur City Council was tossed onto a front burner at the latest meeting of Decatur City Council.
The City of Decatur has never had its own flag, but that oversight is likely to be corrected next year.
The matter was brought to council at its latest meeting by Councilwoman Jenny Bower-Shultz – who suggested having a city flag some time back – Mary Montgomery Byer and Councilman Scott Murray.
Bowers-Shultz said the trio has had a couple of meetings to try to come up with a plan for a flag “which would unify our community, which represents our city, and reflects what we want for our future.”
The plan calls for having a contest in which people would submit designs for a city flag. The contest would continue for several months, then a committee would be selected to narrow the designs to five, eventually having a winner early next year.
“We will have guidelines and lesson plans for teachers,” Montgomery noted.
She said the group was asking council to provide $1,500 from its promotional fund to finance some expenses and provide a prize for the winner. Approval was quickly granted.
“This is a new game. We’re figuring it out as we go,” Bower-Shultz said.
