A pivotal match in the ACAC and for sectional fortunes went the way of Bluffton Thursday night, but the Starfires’ No. 2, Cole Hyman, kept his unbeaten season alive with a great win in the super tiebreak, while Bellmont avoided the shutout at Huntington North and the Jets were beaten by Blackhawk Christian.
Dropping down to No. 2 singles last week has not stopped Hyman from playing some great tennis in the third set recently and Thursday was no different. Playing a fellow senior, Hyman won the first set, then dropped the second, 6-3, sending him into a tiebreaker with the Tigers’ Anthony Hartman.
In the first-to-ten format, Hyman had to find one more point to distinguish himself from Hartman, but it was too little, too late for the Starfires, who had already dropped three of the other four varsity matches on the Bluffton courts.
For Bellmont, the Braves won at No. 2 singles over at Huntington North in NE8 play. Layne LeMaster won comfortably, 6-2, 6-0, to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Vikings, who will be hosting WZBD Friday night for the football game between the same two schools.
