Sidewalks like this one at Adams and Fifth streets are being seen in several areas of Decatur as Brooks Construction Co. begins the process of resurfacing a number of streets and alleys.
Handicap ramps are updated to comply with federal regulations. Once that is completed, the Fort Wayne firm will begin milling (removing top layer) streets designated in the project.
Resurfacing will follow, hopefully around Sept. 12, city Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert said.
The project is the result of a state Community Crossings grant of $810,508.10, with the city providing a match of some $253,300, boosting total funds available for the work to over $1 million: $1,013,135.12.

Following are the streets to be repaved this year via the CC grant (more could be added):
1) Adams street from 3rd to 13th.
2) 5th from Monroe to 2nd.
3) Waters Edge addition.
4) Elm Street from Winchester to Grant.
5) 7th St from Adams to Monroe.
6) Meibers St. from 5th to the railroad.
City funds will be used to repave two parking lots and one alley, plus two streets, to be done by Brooks (more could be added):
1) City parking lot behind 2 Brothers.
2) Parking lot at Riverside Center.
3) Fremont Lane.
4) 5th St. from Adams to Monroe.
5) Alley behind Legion park from Elm St to Stevenson St.
