“They’re the best team in our sectional.”
Those were the words of Bellmont head coach Derek Trobeck after his team was soundly beaten by Bishop Luers Tuesday night in the season opener via the nine-goal mercy rule.
“That’s a team with a bunch of guys who have a lot of experience and they were playing on their home turf,” said Trobeck, referring to the fact that many of the Luers’ players are associated with Fort Wayne Sport Club, the site of Tuesday’s match.
The Knights led 3-0 at halftime and the Braves still felt in the match, but a challenge by the Bellmont coach to the team at halftime to pick up the intensity was not met, and Luers scored instantly in the second half.

Man of the Match honors for the Braves went to Evan Sovine for his work on the field, but for the most part, it was a match to forget for the Braves.

“It was definitely one of the worst losses we’ve ever suffered,” admitted Trobeck. “I think it’s good that we play tomorrow and have a chance to just put it behind us and focus on the next team.”
Christopher Mejia led Bishop Luers with two goals.

The opponent Wednesday night is the Heritage Patriots, long one of the historical rivals for the BHS program.
