The Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) recently awarded a grant to Kate’s Kart, a Northeast Indiana charity, which distributes approximately 4,000 new books a month to 22 Northeast Indiana hospitals through 37 book karts and six book tubs.
Located in the STAT Care / Emergency Room area of the Adams Memorial Hospital, Kate’s Kart volunteers and hospital staff distribute brand new books to children, ages 0 through 18, as they enter the hospital. Children choose a book from the kart, which is theirs to keep and add to their personal libraries. An additional book tub is housed on the 2nd floor of Adams Memorial Hospital for patients who are admitted for surgical or medical appointments. The Kart housed at Adams Memorial Hospital is one of the most used Karts in the outlying communities and averages 100- 150 books distributed every month.
Susan Sefton, Adams Memorial Hospital administrator, reports that these books are wonderful, and often much appreciated diversions for the little ones and even some older kids. When entering the emergency room with children, understandably, the children and their parents are scared or irritable and this helps through the wait time.
Krista Layman, Director of Kate’s Kart, noted that Kate’s Kart applauds the support for the ACCF and this community.Â
Susan Zurcher, ACCF Board of Director member, added that the ACCF is pleased to support this program that is for any client with children in need of services at the Adams Memorial Hospital STAT or emergency room.
