Bellmont climbed into the top half of the NE8 standings with a win on the road at DeKalb Wednesday night, doing just enough to always maintain a lead against the Barons and winning 9-6.
The Barons seemed to have an answer for each of the Braves’ scoring innings, but Bellmont never trailed in the game, always having enough offense to stay in control of the game.
The old phrase of “bend, not break” was working for Bella Ashley, who started the game for the Braves in the circle. She had the Braves in great position heading into the bottom of the sixth with a 7-2 lead and when she got into trouble, the BHS staff went to MK Scheumann. The sophomore fielded a ground ball cleanly and got the second out of the inning, then ended the sixth with a strikeout to snuff out the Baron chance.
Emily Bleke singled in a run and later scored to push Bellmont’s lead back up to four heading into the final at-bats and that was plenty for Scheumann to shine. She worked around a double and a triple and got Stella Mix, who had homered earlier in the contest, on a strikeout to end the game.
The Braves are set to finish their contest against Norwell Saturday morning after it was paused due to a rain delay several weeks ago.
