FLATROCK – A crowd of well over 200 people was on hand for the festivities surround Senior Night for the Heritage boys volleyball team as they took on Leo and the crowd was served up quite a show, with the home team winning 25-20, 25-14, 25-15.
After the junior varsity contest was split 1-1, the program honored all of its previous players from decades ago, allowing them to get a look at the new generation of male volleyball players at the school. The team stayed unbeaten at home and moved to 5-3 on the season.
Braden Walter and Zeke Litchfield led the team in kills with nine apiece, with Litchfield proving to be especially lethal at the net.
The Patriots also dominated the stat sheet at the net with blocks, as Litchfield finished with three and Grayson Mullins with six. Eli Tigulis and Graham Simmons each had four blocks, with Leo struggling to counter the height advantage that clearly belonged to Heritage.
It wasn’t all height, though, that won it for Heritage. Freshman libero Chase Buuck had a pair of aces and offered a change of pace when his turn came to serve. Buuck had five digs, but more than anything, he handled the Leo service game and set his team up for success.
One thing coach Abby Tigulis will hope to improve was the serve percentage for the boys after they committed a total of 13 service errors in the three sets.
Leading the Patriots in digs were Jacob Reece and Corban Roth. Each had nine, while Braden Walter had seven.
The team is set to play at South Side Thursday night. The Patriots will play at home on Monday against Concordia Lutheran.
