Richard Lee Schwartz, 79, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Townhouse Rehabilitation. He was born in Berne, IN, on July 12, 1944, son of the late L. Reuben and Rachael (Steury) Schwartz. Richard was united in marriage at the Decatur Missionary Church to Janice E. Bixler, on June 11, 1966, she preceded him in death on December 18, 2021.
Richard graduated from Adams Central High School, class of 1962. He was a dairy farmer up until 1977. He then started working at Central Soya where he retired from after 36 years of service. He was also a member of the Army Reserves.
Richard loved to travel with his family (especially to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri). He also loved to watch any type of sporting event (especially IU Basketball and the Colts). You could always find him outside mowing his yard, working on his rose bushes and tomato plants. He also enjoyed going out to eat. Richard never knew a stranger that he wouldn’t give a smile to or talk to (sometimes for too long).
Richard is survived by his daughter, Stephanie (Scott) Cox of Decatur; his son, Steven Schwartz of Decatur; 2 sisters, Irene (Marvin) Watkins of Decatur and Flossie (Bob) Cable of Auburn, IN; a sister-in-law, Betty Bixler of Decatur; a brother-in-law, Roger Bixler of Decatur.
Richard was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Janette (Norman) Koomler and Carol (Glen) Yager; a brother, Leonard (Linda) Schwartz.
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with a visitation an hour before the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Rev. Steve Bard will be officiating and burial will follow in Decatur Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to ACCF Angel Cancer Fund.
