Judith E. Howenstine, 80, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Adams Woodcrest of Decatur. She was born in Huntington, IN, on July 12, 1943, to the late Eugene F. and Ruth L. (Robbins) Casper. On August 28, 1965, she married James D. Howenstine and after 48 years together he preceded her in death on April 6, 2014.
She was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. She was a 1961 graduate of Huntington High School and then graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1964. She worked as registered nurse in South Bend at St. Joseph Hospital for a year and a half.
In 1972, Judy and her late husband, Jim purchased the Coast To Coast Hardware Store in Decatur. They also had a store in Wabash and were the owners & operators of Howenstine Hardware Corporation until they retired in 2007.
In retirement, Judy enjoyed traveling for 7 years with her husband and they were members of America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association.
She is survived by her 3 children, Janna (Matt) Enyeart of Leo, IN, Brian (Amy) Howenstine of Wabash, IN, Bradley (Janie) Howenstine of Van Wert, OH; a brother, Michael (Roxy) Casper of Franklin, IN; a sister, Jane Jones of Indianapolis, IN; 4 grandchildren, Connor Enyeart, Allison (Sean) Griesdorn, Elizabeth Howenstine, Emily Howenstine; 1 great grandchild, Louis Griesdorn.
Judy was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Thomas and David Casper.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with visitation an hour before the service from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
Father David Ruppert will be presiding and burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
Memorials may be given to the Adams County Community Foundation Jim & Judy Howenstine Fund or St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.
