Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning of Thursday’s ACAC game between Adams Central and Southern Wells, the Raiders probably felt like they were climbing back into the game after scoring runs in the top of the fourth and fifth to cut the AC lead to 5-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, they were likely thinking about pitch counts and who was coming up to lead off the sixth.
Then it all fell apart. Raiders pitcher Wyatt Yoder hit Cade Van De Weg with the bases loaded and walked in two more, all with two outs. The game ended on a two-run single by Keegan Bluhm to envoke the ten-run rule and end the contest. Southern Wells made a switch at pitcher to Jakob Gearheart for the final two batters of the game, but the outcome was likely inevitable with the bases loaded and Adams Central going for the jugular.
Van De Weg started the game on the mound for the Jets and was nearly unhittable. He allowed just one hit and while he did walk six batters, he also had plenty of swings and misses, striking out 12.
Ethan Funk went 3 for 3 on the day with three singles, scoring twice and knocking in two.
Trevor Currie also had three hits for the Jets. He scored twice after his three singles and knocked in two runs.
The Jets are now 6-2 on the year.
