Decatur resident and Bellmont High School graduate Kyle Lawson is returning home this week from a tour of duty in Kenya, which lasted almost a year, and he does so having made a large impact on the local community there.
Back in the fall, Lawson organized a donation drive after realizing there was a need among the local community where he was serving. You can read the original story below:
Lawson shared with WZBD the success of his efforts and wishes to express his gratitude to friends and family back home.
“I’d like the community to know what they made happen,” Lawson said in a phone call last week from another continent to WZBD.
Lawson explained that over 500 pounds of shoes, clothes and school supplies were delivered by foot patrol members.
“There are 122 kids in that community in Africa now who have been clothed at a local school simply because people in Adams County care about others,” he explained. “Those kids’ lives have been impacted for the next several school years.”
Lawson said that he enjoyed his time in Africa and is looking forward to returning home. He has kept tabs on the community and his beloved Bellmont wrestlers through WZBD. He hopes to continue coaching and officiating when he returns to Indiana from his service.
