The Decatur Police Department has a candidate for an opening on the department.
Police Chief Kevin Gerber told the city’s board of works and safety at its latest meeting that the next step will be taking the applicant to Indianapolis for the PERF (Public Employees Retirement Fund) examination.
The board readily gave its approval.
Gerber said the department had seven applicants for the opening, and five were interviewed. The number was narrowed to three for further interviews and home visits, then a final choice was made.
The applicant will be revealed if he/she passes PERF mental and physical exams.
The department is one officer short of a full complement of 20 following the December 1 resignation of Blaze Books.
The full staff of 20 officers includes Chief Gerber and Deputy Chief Chris Brite.
