It will be a special night at the Teepee tonight in Decatur when the top team in 2A (Bellmont) hosts the top team in 1A (Adams Central) in one of the classic rivalries in the state of Indiana for high school wrestling.
The Bellmont Braves are already 22-0 and Thursday’s match with the Jets marks the last dual meet before the team wrestles at Team State, likely as the #1 seed.
The Adams Central Jets are set to wrestle 11 more matches after Thursday before they step onto the mats at Rochester for the 1A Team State.
Much of the storyline surrounding Thursday’s matchup will revolve around the lineup that Adams Central uses. If coach Currie has a full arsenal of weapons, including seniors Zac Wurm and Keegan Bluhm, then it could be an old-fashioned shootout. The Jets also forfeited 120 Wednesday night against Norwell. Giving up six points down low with a forfeit will severely hamper any hope the visitors will have of pulling off a shocking upset.
Since the 1990 season, Adams Central has only defeated Bellmont once in a dual meet.
Thursday’s broadcast on WZBD of the match will be preceded by a special episode of High School Wrestling Weekly at 5 p.m.
