Knowing that some of the team’s hopes and dreams for the upcoming season rested solely on Tuesday night’s results, the South Adams Starfires delivered an inspired performance for coach Robert Loshe’s head coaching debut, beating the Team State-bound Cowan Blackhawks 46-30 in the Stardome.
The win allows South Adams to walk into Thursday night’s match (which will be broadcast on WZBD’s YouTube channel) at Delta with nothing to lose. No one is expecting the Starfires to knock off Delta, but it will be a good chance for the team to see just where they fall against a team that could be the favorite to take this year’s regional.
After the lead changed hands at the end of each of the first nine bouts, the Starfires did not relinquish the lead once freshman Wes Summersett made an emphatic debut with a headlock fall at 175.
Summersett was bumped up to help the team beat Cowan.
The biggest upset of the night came in the very first bout, where Dakota Sprunger beat Bowen Keith with a third-period reversal to win 3-2 at 120.
Also making an impressive debut was Will Patterson, who looked to be in great position to knock off Raef Keith with a tight cradle in the first period, but it was the Cowan senior who had the last laugh with a cradle of his own at 126.
