Bellmont put up 49 points in the first half at the RaiderDome Wednesday night, blitzing the home Southern Wells Raiders with lights-out shooting and solid defense before going on to empty the bench in the second half and win comfortably, 71-37.
Leading the way for the Braves were Jack Scheumann (20 points) and Andrew James (16). Neither senior guard played in the fourth quarter as coach Payton Selking played everyone in the second half and even got them all in the scoring column.
James was a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the opening half and Scheumann made nine shots in the first three quarters.
Southern Wells received a great performance from senior guard Chandler Oswalt in the second half. Oswalt had half the team’s 16 points in the first two quarters, and then went on a run, hitting five three pointers in the second half to finish with a game-high 26 points.
Kord Fuelling also had a good night, scoring 13 points before taking his seat to watch the younger guys play the fourth quarter.
In that youthful fourth, Bellmont got a three from Maddux Miller, a bucket from Jake Hackman and two points from Beau Baker. Daniel Vogel and Will Baker were also on the floor and held Southern Wells to just nine points across the eight minutes.
Bellmont will play the first home game of the season Saturday against Woodlan and Bellmont grad (and former head coach) John Baker. That game will be broadcast live on WZBD, 92.7 FM.
