It was a fantastic 24-hour period for Adams Central athletics with the football team completing a perfect regular season and the girls cross country and volleyball teams capturing sectional titles. There was, however, another Jet competing who may have flown under the radar, but it does not diminish his accomplishments.
“He had a great season,” noted head coach Brent Doster, whose research found that Brown was the first Jet to compete at this level dating back as far as at least 2012. “For him to take thiree games in that first set is a testament to his work and effort this season.”
Adams Central’s Ean Brown went unbeaten at last week’s tennis sectional as the No. 1 singles player and that elevated him into the individual tournament for the IHSAA, setting him up to play Alex Rongos of Columbia City in Kokomo.
The Saturday morning weather necessitated a change of venue for the match as the AC contingent shifted from Kokomo High School’s tennis complex to an indoor facility in neighboring Greentown.
Taking on Rongos, who entered the day with a 22-1 record, Brown played to the best of his ability and ended his season with a 6-3, 6-1 loss.
In the other individual match, Westfield’s Alex Sagarra beat Ettore Bona of East Noble, 6-4, 6-3.
Rongos and Sagarra then met for the regional title and it was a victory for the Eagles’ Rongos in a match that went three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.
Rongos is one of just seven singles players left in the state this season.
Brown ended his senior season at 12-6.
Doubles play was also held at the facility and Carroll’s top pair of Connor Gibson and Jaxson Sparks won twice to keep their season alive, beating a team from Delta and later a team from Warsaw in straight sets.
Homestead’s doubles team is still alive with the team in this year’s tournament, as well.
