Two property owners in Decatur are facing large fines if they fail to bring long-awaited cleanups to their properties.
Laurie Blythe’s property at 1620 W. Madison St. and Richard Chapman’s property at 922 Harrison St. were the latest code enforcement issues brought to the city’s board of works and safety.
Both properties have been long-standing issues, Brad Roe, assistant superintendent of the building and zoning department, told the board. That department oversees code enforcement in the city.
“Weeds taller than cars,” inoperable vehicles and a dilapidated building were some of the problems cited at the Harrison St. property, according to Roe.
“We’ve dealt with this one before,” starting in 2021, Roe said of the W. Madison St. property.
Blythe had been staying in contact with the department until about two months ago, “then she seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth,” Roe said.
Both land owners were to be given notices of having 10 days to clean up their properties before fines of $100 will be imposed.
