Decatur police were providing traffic control at a busy city intersection late this morning and into the afternoon.
An unusually high volume of grain trucks were attempting to reach the Bunge North America plant on Decatur’s north side and causing traffic congestion at the busy 13th and Washington streets intersection.
Semi trucks were backed up on Washington St. on the west side of the intersection.
Police put out a statement before noon asking people to “please be mindful of the intersection at 13th & Washington St. The Bunge plant is dealing with a high volume of truck traffic that is causing semi traffic congestion in this area.
“Semi trucks are backed up going west of this intersection along Washington. Officers are diligently working to clear the roadways, and Bunge is working on a solution to deal with the volume of trucks. If you normally travel through this area, you may want to use an alternate road until the traffic is cleared up.”
One unconfirmed report said that the closing of two other Bunge plants brought about the extra traffic attempting to reach the Decatur plant.
