With high school football on everyone’s minds this fall, we thought we would take a look back to a memorable night in the sport in Decatur, when QB Dave Anspaugh led the Decatur Yellow Jackets to a convincing 27-6 victory over previously unbeaten Portland High School.
We’d also like to point out that one of the members of our Z-Team was on the beat that night, contributing his thoughts to the story for the Decatur Daily Democrat, 60 years ago. Bob Shraluka wrote that night that never before had he seen a team put forth such an effort collectively.
Max Elliott led the Braves with 217 yards rushing on just 14 carries, scoring two touchdowns on runs of four yards and 49.
Future Hollywood director Dave Anspaugh hit Bill Blythe (pictured in photo) for a 52-yard passing score and Buster Melchi also scored for the Jackets that night.
Decatur was coached that year by Wally Yeoman, with the help of assistants Jerry Mitchel, Gary Giessler and Steve Brandenburg.
Listen to WZBD 92.7 FM Friday night as #1 Bluffton travels to Heritage for more great high school football coverage this week.
Decatur fans can travel to Worthman Friday when the Bellmont Braves host New Haven in their homecoming game.
You can still catch Bob Shraluka’s work daily on WZBD.com.
