It was an NE8 matchup between Huntington North and Bellmont Tuesday night at Cross Creek as the Braves came away with a 23-stroke victory over the visiting Vikings.
Ella Hockemeyer turned in the best round of the day for the Braves, finishing with a 49. She played great golf after making a 10 on the first hole, playing the final eight holes at +9 and making an important par at hole No. 7.
“The girls did well tonight,” said head coach Mike Macke after the 205-228 conference triumph, “playing the tougher front side after playing slow greens at McMillen the night before.”
Macke noted that he had a coaching moment with Hockemeyer after her first hole.
“She got it together after that,” he said. “She played her best golf in over a week the rest of the way.”
Adalyn Cutting took medalist honors for the day for Huntington North with a 46.
Meghan Pettibone was a few strokes behind Hockemeyer, but still turned in her best Front Nine of the year on her home course. She made par on the opening hole to get off to a good start.
Meanwhile, Krosbi Butler shot not only her best round at Cross Creek, but the best round of the year so far with a 50.
The Braves moved to 4-2 with the win.
Macke pointed out that his freshmen had a good night, as well.
“The freshmen did a nice job tonight also,” he thought. “Huntington only had one JV girl, so she and Morgan (Huss) played the front side as well. The other three played the Majorki (Par 33). While their scores aren’t dropping quickly, they are picking up fewer double pars and are definitely improving!”
