Sixty-one golfers teed it up Sunday at Cross Creek for one of the favorite events of the year, the Whitlock Shootout to fight Cancer. Burt and Mary Whitlock were longtime residents of the Cross Creek community and were known for their passion and support of local golfers, often following as spectators at various events. Upon their passing after battling cancer, the event was organized in their name with proceeds donated to the Adams County Community Foundation Dreams to Reality Fund for the local fight against cancer. This year, a check for $850 will be written to ACCF in honor of the Whitlocks.

The shootout format is rather unique as golfers are first divided into divisions of nine or less. Each division is given a starting hole and play the hole simultaneously. The highest score is then eliminated with ties broken by a chip-off and the remaining golfers advance to the next hole. The pattern continues until there is one winner left standing. Winners of each division then embark on an additional shootout to determine an overall champion.

Division winners:
Men’s A: Landon Shultz
Men’s B: Ike Ruble
Men’s C: Justin Armenta
Men’s D: Maverick Shifferly
Women’s: Sue Kalver
Senior Men A: Scott Ainsworth
Senior Men B: Shawn Arriaga
Super Senior A: Steve Pilkington
Super Senior B: Ron Kuhnle
The nine champions and Junior entry Cameron Summers battled for the overall crown as carts of spectators lined the fairways and behind the greens to cheer them on. Congratulations to Landon Shultz who outlasted the field of division winners and eliminated Ike Ruble on the ninth hole of the Majorki Course for the overall Championship.
A big Thank You goes out to Cross Creek for hosting the annual event, Scott Ainsworth for organizing and directing the golf, and Dr. Mike Ainsworth for donating funds to cover refreshments for the participants. It is a wonderful event for a worthy cause.
