Looking to win a fourth consecutive sectional title in 2023, the South Adams Starfires began their season with a convincing straight-set victory on the road over the Blackford Bruins Monday with a new-look lineup after graduating a big senior class last year.
Coach Ashley Buckingham’s team moved to 1-0 with a 25-17, 25-12, 25-15 win on the Bruins’ home court, led by Macy Pries’s 15 kills.
The team schedule has the Starfires on a bit of a whirlwind tour over the first week with some team building taking place on the bus with trips to Blackford County, Randolph County and Miami County. The Stars play at Winchester Thursday and in an invitational Saturday at North Miami.

Laney Trausch stepped into the setter position and delivered a solid opening performance, picking up 20 assists and burning the Bruins for five aces. She also tallied five digs over the three sets.
Aside from Pries’s 15 points, South Adams got nine kills from Reagan Bollenbacher and five kills apiece from Avery Brown, Reagan Beitler and Gracy Bixler. Beitler also had 11 assists as the Starfires attempt to work out their best rotation early in the season.

Pries led the team with 11 digs, while Makenzie Miller had six and Trausch added five.
The Starfire Junior Varsity team won in two sets, 25-18, 25-22. GinaMarie Summersett had five kills and Riley Bollenbacher had four aces.
