As Decatur continues to grow, infrastructure needs also grow. So Utilities Director Kevin Hackman (photo) continues to look ahead.

At its July 5 meeting, the city’s board of works and safety gave Hackman the okay to spend $23,000 to have Midwestern Engineers to do a study evaluating various water main extensions and replacements.

The Indiana firm will also provide cost estimates for any proposed projects.
One project could be the addition of a new main on Winchester Road, in the area of the Cross Creek Subdivision and Barrington Woods.
“It (the study) will give us a cost estimate plan to see what we can afford to do in the future,” Hackman told the board.
Meanwhile, Hackman and Infrastructure Manager Josh Zimmerman discussed with the board a repeal and replacement of chapter 52 storm water regulations in the city’s Code of Ordinances.
The changes are being made due to altered state requirements, Hackman explained. Other communities are doing the same as the state seeks to standardize the regulations.
No fees will be changed, he added.
The board approved of the change on two readings, then tabled the third and final reading to the July 18 meeting. Due to an ordinance being changed, a public hearing is required and will be held that night.
