It took a considerable effort to complete the project, but Decatur now has something few other communities can boast of: a mural. A mural on the street, that is!
It’s big and bold and beautiful, and “splashes” across Second St. downtown, between Monster Pizza and Sherwin-Williams.
Big? For sure. Local artist Shelby Nower, who completed the mural last Saturday during Downtown Decatur Day, estimates the painting is approximately 14 feet by 25 feet.
Shelby said she worked on the mural for some eight hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The street was closed to traffic during the downtown event and the area where Nower was working was roped off.
She said she used about three and a half gallons of paint to complete the work.
GREAT DAY: At the city council meeting three days after Downtown Decatur Day, Mayor Dan Rickord hailed it as a “great day.”
He said there were “way more vendors than before and way more people than before.”
Decatur Main Street organizes the event and this year’s was the fifth annual.
“Thank you to all the people involved,” Rickord said. “It was great. A lot of people were involved (in planning and operating) and we want to thank them all.”
