Two local athletes threw their way into an extension of their seasons and a trip to Bloomington next Friday to compete in the IHSAA State Finals. Trenton Hoffman finally got over the hump and finished second in the discus, while Heritage’s Leviticus Land turned in a great PR throw to make it in the shot put for the Patriots.Â

The biggest surprise of the meet, held at Carroll High School this year, was Churubusco winning the team title, beating out Homestead by ten points. The Eagles were led by Riley Buroff, who was second in the 200 and the regional champ in the 400.  The school had never even won a sectional title before this season’s meet.
Norwell’s Trevon Stoppenhagen also qualified for state, finishing second in the 200.
Also of note in the meet was a crazy finish to the 800, which saw the top six runners all qualify with times of 2:00. Wyatt Neireiter of Busco finished at 2:00.02 and sixth-place Josh Roper from Snider was at 2:00.98.
Bellmont’s Ian Webb turned in a PR in his final race in a Bellmont uniform before heading to the Air Force. He would have needed a school record-breaking time to crack the top three, but still finished fifth to score the only team points for the Braves.

Norwell’s Jake Parker narrowly missed qualifying in both hurdles events, finishing fourth in the 300 hurdles by just .05 seconds.
Land’s third-place distance in the shot was 17 inches better than the throw he made at the ACAC meet, but the key for Land was finishing ahead of Johnny Cruz and Zac Wurm to take the final qualifying spot. Cruz was the ACAC champ with Wurm second and Land third earlier this year.Â

Land’s teammate, Charlie Riddle, was unable to replicate his sectional distance and did not qualify. His sectional distance would have been good enough for second place at the regional meet and would have bumped Land out.Â

Hoffman was second behind Eastside’s double winner Dane Sebert. The AC senior qualified comfortably in second despite being five feet shorter than his distance at sectional.
Bellmont’s Trevor Smith had to clear 12 feet to start against tough competition and was unable to better his career best, which was 11-06.
