Jack Scheumann went off Thursday at DeKalb with a 5 for 5 night as the Braves’ bats woke up to lead the team to a 10-1 victory in the NE8. The Braves are now 3-3 in the conference with one game to play at East Noble next Thursday.
The Braves pounded out 14 hits and did not commit an error in one of their best performances of the season.Â
Eli Laurent went the whole way, limiting his pitch count to go the distance, striking out seven and walking none. DeKalb managed just six hits and only one run, which came with the team already down 8-0.Â
The Braves were hitting as soon as they got off the bus, scoring three in the first inning before DeKalb could record an out. Scheumann picked up the first of his five hits with an RBI single to center.Â
“When Eli got off the bus and left his earbuds in, I knew he was focused,” said Keagan Martin of Laurent’s dominance. “I knew he was going to have a good game.”
Brendan Vance, the starter for DeKalb, worked a clean second but ran into more trouble in the third.
Timo Christner led off the inning with a double and Dylan Velez and Scheumann followed with the same to make it 5-0. Beau Baker, who was behind the plate for the first four innings, followed with an RBI single and was replaced on the basepaths by his fellow backstop, Keagan Martin. Martin stole second and then scored on Will Baker’s single to right. Andrew James later singled and scored to make it 8-0 Bellmont.
Scheumann had RBI singles in the sixth and seventh, driving in James and Velez for the ninth and tenth runs of the night.
The Braves play a doubleheader at Northrop Saturday.
