DECATUR – Bellmont held Leo to just one score in the first quarter and scored touchdowns in both halves as Cole Barger (shown below) helped the Braves end their scoreless drought against the Lions in a 48-13 loss in Week 6 in Decatur.
Having not scored against the Lions since 2022, the Braves got on the board when they trailed 20-0 on a long pass over the top to Barger from 44 yards out.
Unfortunately for the Braves, the Lions ran the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown, with Max Schreck needing just 13 seconds to answer the Bellmont score.
A late score in the first half gave the Lions a 34-6 advantage.
Henry Faurote gave the Braves the ball back on the first play of the second half with an interception, but the Braves failed to move the chains on fourth down and gave it right back. That cycle continued twice more, with Mason White recovering a fumble and Braxton Arriaga catching a tipped ball in his return to the team with his broken arm bandaged up.
Leo scored twice more in the fourth quarter on back-to-back possessions after the Braves failed to act on a kickoff between the two scores that landed on the 19 and was recovered by the Lions for an onside kick recovery.
With the running clock squeezing out the remaining seconds, Charlie Faurote hit Barger again from five yards out and the special teams unit hustled on to attempt the extra point just before time expired.
Faurote finished 14 of 24 passing for 185 yards, hitting Barger four times for 62 yards and the two scores.
Jason Lykins (pictured below) was injured in the game’s final drive, but deserved plenty of credit in the contest. It was perhaps his best career game, picking up 70 yards on 23 carries.
The Braves won the turnover battle with four to none of their own. The return of Jayden Zamora to the line was also impactful for the Braves, who fell to 0-6.
New Haven will host the Braves next week in Week 7 and you can hear the game on 92.7 FM, with the Friday Night Huddle beginning at 6 p.m.
