The Decatur Board of Works and Safety has approved re-roofing the city’s well houses near Berne, as well as replacing an iron filter at the water plant on E. Monroe St. Extended.
The city’s new assistant water superintendent, Seth Haines, brought both issues before the board at its latest meeting.
Haines said mice caused the damage at the Berne well house’s roof.
He presented quotes for repairs from Extreme Builders of Prairie Creek (IN) $13,770, and Arnold Lumber of Decatur, $11,200.
Haines pointed out that the Extreme quote provided removal and take-away of the existing materials while Arnold’s requires the city to handle removal.
The Extreme bid was recommended by Haines, noting that the firm had worked with the city in the past. The board gave its okay.
Peerless Midwest, out of Mishawaka, offered a quote of $32,400 at the east-side water plant. It will assist in the media restoration and final verification of the operation.
“Some of the valves are not working right and we’ve lost anthracite” because of it, Haine told the board. Anthracite removes iron from the water.
Peerless, Haines said, “knows the plant inside and out.”
